SASRA Licensed SACCOs in Kenya 2026: Full List of Deposit-Taking and BOSA SACCOs
If you’re about to join a SACCO, move your savings, or take a SACCO loan, the fastest way to protect your money is to confirm the SACCO is on the current SASRA list. For the 2026 financial year (January 1 to December 31, 2026), the Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA) has licensed 176 deposit-taking (DT) SACCOs, authorized to run FOSA (Front Office Service Activity) accounts, and 176 non-deposit-taking (non-WDT) SACCOs, restricted to BOSA (Back Office Service Activity) only. A further five SACCOs are operating under conditionally restricted licenses, and a small number exited the regulated register during the year.
Below you’ll find the full 2026 lists, what the difference between the two license types means for your money, how to check whether a specific SACCO is licensed, and what to do if it isn’t.
Quick answer: how do I know if a SACCO is SASRA-licensed?
A SACCO is SASRA-licensed for 2026 if its name appears on one of the two official gazetted registers published by SASRA:
- The Licensed Deposit-Taking (DT) SACCOs list — these can legally operate FOSA accounts, meaning you can withdraw your savings, use an ATM card, and access mobile banking-style services.
- The Authorized Non-Deposit-Taking (Non-WDT) SACCOs list — these can only run BOSA, meaning your savings sit in the SACCO as non-withdrawable deposits until you exit membership, but you can still borrow against them.
If a SACCO isn’t on either list, or is marked “conditionally restricted” or “revoked,” it is not authorized to take new deposits from you, and dealing with it carries real risk. SASRA’s gazetted 2026 register confirms 176 institutions approved to undertake deposit-taking business from 1 January to 31 December 2026, with five SACCOs placed on conditionally restricted, credit-only status and two institutions exiting the regulated perimeter during the year.
The lists below are drawn from SASRA’s official gazette notices for 2026 (Deposit-Taking notice dated January 30, 2026, and Non-Deposit-Taking notice dated February 3, 2026). SASRA can update these registers during the year through supplementary notices, so always cross-check against SASRA’s own published list before making a financial decision — see “How to verify” below.

FOSA vs BOSA: why the difference matters to you
This is the single most important thing to understand before you look at the lists.
| Deposit-Taking (DT) SACCO – FOSA | Non-Deposit-Taking SACCO – BOSA only | |
|---|---|---|
| Can you withdraw savings on demand? | Yes, through FOSA (like a bank account) | No — deposits are non-withdrawable while you remain a member |
| ATM card / mobile banking | Often available | Not available |
| Can you still borrow? | Yes | Yes, against your non-withdrawable deposits |
| Typical membership | Open or sector-based (teachers, police, county, community) | Usually tied to one employer, church, or institution |
| Regulator | SASRA (full prudential supervision) | SASRA (authorized, lighter non-deposit-taking regime) |
Neither category is automatically “better” — a BOSA-only SACCO tied to your employer can still be a solid place to save and borrow.
What matters is that the SACCO you’re dealing with is on SASRA’s current list for the category it claims to operate in.
A SACCO that offers FOSA-style withdrawable accounts without appearing on the DT list is operating illegally, regardless of what its marketing materials say.

Full list: 176 SASRA-authorized Non-Deposit-Taking (BOSA-only) SACCOs for 2026
SASRA released its annual register authorising 176 SACCOs to offer non-deposit-taking financial services from January 1 to December 31, 2026. These entities, often formed by employees of specific companies, government agencies, or religious institutions, are only permitted to manage members’ savings and provide loans through the Back Office Services Activity model. Many are tied to a single employer or organization, so you’ll typically only encounter the one linked to your workplace, church, or association.

SACCOs under conditionally restricted licenses in 2026
SASRA has confirmed that five SACCOs are barred from taking any new deposits but are allowed to continue lending from existing funds under heavy SASRA supervision, following red flags such as liquidity strain, non-performing loans above the regulatory limit, and governance failures uncovered during audits. These SACCOs are:

If you’re a member of one of these SACCOs, you can still repay existing loans, but you should not add new savings or deposits until the SACCO regains a full license. If you’re considering joining a SACCO and it appears on this restricted list, hold off and ask the SACCO directly what triggered the restriction and when SASRA expects to review it.
SACCOs that exited the regulated register in 2026
Two DT-SACCOs left SASRA’s regulated perimeter during 2026: Nufaika Sacco (Kirinyaga) exited through a voluntary merger with another regulated SACCO, with its license lapsing on December 31, 2025, while PESA Sacco (Nairobi) had its authorization revoked after failing to meet member obligations following the closure of its sponsoring employer. Separately, on the non-deposit-taking side, SASRA’s February 2026 notice also revoked licenses for six other SACCOs and issued strict warnings against transacting with any unauthorised entity. SASRA’s notice did not name all six in the summaries available at publication, so if you deal with a smaller or lesser-known Non-WDT SACCO, verify its current status directly with SASRA rather than relying on last year’s list.
How to verify a SACCO’s current SASRA status
Media lists like the ones above are compiled from SASRA’s gazette notices and are a useful starting point, but SASRA’s own website is the authoritative, continuously updated source. Before you commit money:
- Go to SASRA’s official “Regulated SACCOs” pages — sasra.go.ke lists “Licensed DT-SACCOs” and “Authorized Non-WDT SACCOs” separately, each with a downloadable PDF of the current gazetted register.
- Download the current-year list, not an old one — SASRA re-issues the list annually and sometimes supplements it mid-year with restrictions or revocations.
- Match the exact registered name. SACCOs sometimes share similar-sounding names; confirm you’re looking at the exact entity, including “DT,” “Non-WDT,” or “Society Limited” where it appears in the official name.
- Ask to see the SACCO’s physical license. By law, licensed SACCOs must display their current SASRA license at their head office and branches.
- Call SASRA directly if you’re unsure — SASRA’s head office is at UAP Old Mutual Tower, Upper Hill Road, Nairobi, and its published contact line is +254 (20) 2935101.
Why SASRA licensing matters before you save or borrow
SASRA supervises deposit-taking and specified non-deposit-taking SACCOs under the SACCO Societies Act, checking things like capital adequacy, liquidity, asset quality, and governance before renewing a license each year. Saving with a licensed SACCO means your deposits sit within a regulated framework with ongoing prudential oversight. Saving or investing with an unlicensed entity claiming to be a “SACCO” removes that protection entirely — there is no regulator standing behind your deposit, and recovering your money if the entity collapses or turns out to be fraudulent is far harder.
This distinction matters more than which SACCO has the highest advertised dividend rate. A SACCO that isn’t licensed shouldn’t be in the conversation at all, regardless of what returns it promises.
What to check before joining or borrowing from any licensed SACCO
Being on the SASRA list confirms a SACCO is legally authorized — it doesn’t tell you everything about whether it’s the right fit for you. Before joining, ask:
- Who can join? Some SACCOs are open (community or county-based); others are restricted to employees of a specific company, government agency, or professional body.
- What are the minimum share capital and monthly contribution requirements? These vary significantly between SACCOs and are set by each SACCO’s own by-laws, not by SASRA.
- What is the loan-to-deposit or loan-to-savings multiplier? Many SACCOs let members borrow a multiple of their savings/shares, but the exact multiplier, interest rate, and repayment period differ by SACCO and by loan product.
- Is interest charged on a reducing balance or flat rate? This materially changes what you actually pay — ask for the effective annual rate, not just the headline monthly rate.
- What happens if you want to exit membership? Non-withdrawable deposits in BOSA-only SACCOs are typically only released (in full or in part) when you formally exit membership, which can take time.
- What guarantor or collateral requirements apply to loans? Some SACCOs require member guarantors; others accept salary check-off, title deeds, or logbooks depending on the loan size.
- What are the latest audited dividend and interest-on-deposits rates? Ask for the SACCO’s most recent AGM report or audited financials rather than relying on verbal promises — rates change every year based on performance and are approved at the AGM, not guaranteed in advance.
Because these terms differ from one SACCO to the next and change from year to year, always confirm them directly with the specific SACCO’s current by-laws and latest AGM communication rather than assuming they match what you’ve read elsewhere, including in this article.
Frequently asked questions
Is a SACCO safe just because it’s on the SASRA list? Licensing means the SACCO met SASRA’s minimum regulatory requirements at the time of its last review and remains under ongoing supervision. It’s a strong baseline signal of legitimacy, but it isn’t a guarantee against all risk — even licensed SACCOs can be placed under restriction if problems emerge later in the year, as happened to five SACCOs in 2026. Check a SACCO’s current status, not just whether it was licensed at some point.
Can a BOSA-only (non-deposit-taking) SACCO still give me a loan? Yes. BOSA-only SACCOs can’t offer withdrawable FOSA accounts, but they can still accept non-withdrawable member deposits/shares and lend against them, typically to members of the specific employer, institution, or association the SACCO serves.
What should I do if I find my SACCO isn’t on either 2026 list? Don’t make new deposits or take a new loan until you’ve confirmed directly with SASRA. Contact the SACCO and ask for its current license, and cross-check the name against SASRA’s official website. If it genuinely isn’t licensed, report it and avoid transacting with it — dealing with unlicensed SACCO business is legally risky for you as well as the operator.
How often does SASRA update this list? SASRA gazettes the full list annually, ahead of the new financial year, and can issue supplementary notices during the year for restrictions, revocations, or new licenses (as happened with the five conditionally restricted SACCOs and two exits during 2026). Treat any list, including this one, as current as of its publication date and re-check for updates before making a major financial decision.
Key takeaways
SASRA licensed 176 deposit-taking SACCOs and authorized 176 non-deposit-taking SACCOs for the 2026 financial year, with five more operating under conditional restrictions and a small number exiting the register during the year.
The list tells you whether a SACCO is legally allowed to hold your deposits and, for DT-SACCOs, whether it can offer withdrawable FOSA accounts — but it’s only the starting point.
Before you commit your savings or take a loan, confirm the SACCO’s current status directly on SASRA’s official website, ask to see its physical license, and get its specific membership, contribution, interest, and dividend terms in writing rather than relying on general lists like this one, since those details vary by SACCO and change year to year.
